About Jenna Travers

As a M.S. student in Marine Resource Management at Oregon State University with a deep interest in science communication, I am dedicated to bridging the gap between climate science and the public. For my thesis, I am investigating differences in media narratives and public perceptions surrounding two populations of bioinvasive salmon populations in high latitudes. I earned a B.S. in marine biology with minors in science communication and geography from the University of Oregon, where my thesis focused on diverging stakeholder narratives of glacier retreat and salmon declines in Washington State. In addition to my graduate studies, I am also a writer for GlacierHub—a climate news outlet based out of Columbia University that covers glaciers, mountain communities, and climate change—where I create content focusing on cryosphere stories around the world with a special interest on the Pacific Northwest and the communities I\'ve grown up in. I am also a GIS intern with the USFS Zigzag Ranger District where I utilize ESRI tools to create interactive web maps, story maps, and data-sharing tools to help stakeholders and members of the public follow the ongoing restoration efforts of the Oregon Sandy River Basin for salmon populations. Simultaneously, as a Science Communication Fellow for ODFW\'s Eastern Pacific Marine One Health Coalition, I am developing a website and social media platforms aimed at raising awareness about marine health issues in the Pacific Northwest and improving collaboration between stakeholders. Looking ahead, I plan to leverage my multidisciplinary background to increase the role of community members and stakeholders in fisheries management and watershed restoration. By utilizing different forms of media to tell the story of fisheries management, climate change, and marine issues, I hope to improve public awareness and participation in these issues for better management outcomes.
