About Jenn Smith
Welcome! I\'m a journalist, a community engagement advocate, an educator, a constant collaborator, a mentor, a connector and a lifelong learner. This is roll-up-your-sleeves work. I believe in seeking truth, the power and impact of listening, fact-checking, storytelling, building literacy and partnerships, particularly at the local news level. I cut my teeth as a small-town obituary writer and news release editor turned full-time reporter in Western Massachusetts and now enjoy the challenges and joys of covering education and collaborating with community members on news projects in Seattle. I\'ve worked in the print and online news industry, reporting, editing, developing reader-centered initiatives and building community relationships for nearly 20 years. Produce and promote Ed Lab\'s coverage of potential solutions to persistent problems in public education in Washington state- Collaborate with community members to produce essays, projects and events addressing the issues they face and strategies that are working to solve them- Co-lead the newsroom Equity Team for diversity, equity and inclusion. We coordinate and analyze results from a newsroom sentiment survey to inform strategies for closing internal equity gaps, improving newsroom culture and ensuring news coverage is inclusive, accurate, fair and representative of the people and issues in our region- Co-lead newsroom engagement training to teach staff members strategies to build trust, diverse sources and better involve reader and community feedback in reporting.
