He might not survive and if he does, he might be paralyzed for life.”Those are words that no one wants to hear and those are the same words that changed my life and my family’s life forever. When I was 12-years-old, my brother was thrown from a car, did a flip in the air, and landed on his head.That day was a blur. I was playing in the yard with the girl next door when our neighbor went to speak with my mom. The next thing I know, my mom and I were rushing to the hospital where we met my dad and oldest brother. The doctor took my family into a small room and told us what the tests had revealed. The physician explained my brother had shattered half of his skull and there was detachment of the bone between my brother\'s skull and neck. The doctor informed us my brother might not make it and if he does, there was a good chance he would be paralyzed.My brother was in the hospital for several days and he had to go through physical and occupational therapy. We were almost afraid to hope, but by the grace of God, he made a full recovery! It still moves me to think of those weeks and months where we began to see and believe he would be OK.That accident changed us all and made us closer as a family. I learned life is fragile that day and you only have one life, so you need to live it to the fullest. I watched my brother fight for his life and then fight to learn things again. He struggled, but he kept going. I learned resiliency from him, and that has helped me in my own trials, failures, and work experiences.After that experience, I knew I wanted to help people. At first, I thought I would be a nurse, but found my skills were in other areas. God has given me a heart to help people, a thirst for knowledge, and a desire to do the right thing. Now, I use those gifts to help companies and the people that work in those companies create a safe environment and a culture of compliance.
