After two years of full-time adjunct teaching at SPU, I gratefully accepted a contract as an assistant professor of English and writing. In a typical academic year, I am teaching a variety of courses: Two are SPU\'s freshman composition courses: First, I teach the intro to academic writing course, which I call \"Do You See What I See? The Practice of Writing About the Arts.\" Second, I teach a disciplinary research and writing seminar called \"Loving Our Neighbors From Anywhere: Research, Writing, and Global Cinema.\" My intro to creative writing course is called \"How to Play With Words: A Workshop for Writing Poetry, Fiction, and Creative Nonfiction.\" I also teach a film-and-faith course called \"Through a Screen Darkly: A Survey of Films Old and New\"; a fiction course called \"The Art of Short (and Shorter) Stories: A Literary Fiction Workshop\"; and \"Love is Attention: How to Breathe Life Into the Details of Fiction.\" It is a great honor to teach at my alma mater. After graduating in 1994 with an aim to publish novels and reviews, I have been blessed with opportunities to achieve both of those goals. I now apply my skills to equipping young writers toward their own achievements in fiction, creative nonfiction, and film criticism.
