About Jeffrey Castellano

I work between emerging technology and lived experience. Usually before standards exist. Often before the story settles. For more than twenty years, my career has moved across AI, real-time systems, simulation, spatial computing, and design-engineering. From early research to global deployment. I’ve owned decisions where abstraction breaks and being wrong actually costs something. Most recently, I served as Senior Director and Head of Spatial at IBM, with P&L ownership and cross-functional teams spanning design, engineering, and go-to-market. I drove revenue by turning technical capability into durable products and services. I translated emerging technologies into platforms that could survive reality. Generative AI. RT3D simulation. Digital twins. Spatial systems operating under enterprise, regulatory, and organizational constraint.Shipping real systems requires arbitration. Between ambition and feasibility. Between speed and correctness. Between vision and what could actually work. That included knowing when to push forward, when to pivot, and what to shut down.My work lives where taste and systems meet. Where products are felt, not explained. Where latency and failure modes matter. Where leadership means owning irreversible decisions instead of signaling certainty.Alongside my professional work, I maintain an active research and writing practice exploring the relationship between sensory technology, creativity, and nature. I hold a degree from The Cooper Union, serve as Digital Chair for the Global Fine Art Awards, and collaborate across art and technology communities.I don’t optimize for hype.I build systems that hold.

Experience

  1. Senior Director, Product Design - Ai

    IBM

    Jan 2023 — Present

Responsible for product and system decisions across AI platforms at enterprise scale, working where technical feasibility, correctness, and organizational constraint met. Focused on setting platform direction and turning emerging technical capability into systems that could be built, deployed, and sustained.Led cross-functional teams across product, engineering, design, research, and go-to-market. Made tradeoffs between speed and stability, ambition and operational reality, including redirecting efforts that did not hold up.Served on IBM’s AI Leadership Council, where I introduced the platform direction and built the first iterations of a shared AI platform adopted across the organization, replacing fragmented approaches with a common foundation teams could build on.
