ABOUT JEFFREY FISCHER

At FortisAlberta I am, alongside my colleagues in the Employee and Labour Relations Team, responsible for recruitment of both in scope unionized and out of scope positions across the organization. I also contribute alongside the team on policy development, process improvement, engagement, analytics, reporting, and a variety of other projects within the ELR space. I previously spent 4.5 years in the recruitment agency world with Roevin, primarily recruiting in the oil and gas sector, but recruited a variety of other fields as well, including construction, biomedical/scientific, and other technical roles. I remain a scientist at heart and enjoy following scientific advancements, particularly in the biotech and biochemistry fields. Prior to my time in HR, I pursued a career as a biochemist, performing research on diverse topics such as protein biochemistry, antibiotic research, synthetic biology, neutraceuticals, plant-made pharmaceuticals, breast cancer research, agricultural biotechnology, and phytoremediation. I have managed my own research subgroups, coordinating multiple projects simultaneously. I have further experience in training and development, teaching a wide variety of laboratory and classroom topics ranging from introductory chemistry to advanced biochemistry and synthetic biology. Additional duties have included managing laboratory safety and radioisotope laboratories. The time I spent teaching and recruiting for my own research projects has provided me with a unique perspective on recruitment and selection.
