GRADUATE RESEARCH SUMMARYMain Research Focus: Design, characterization, and optimization of solid adsorbents for post-combustion CO2 capture and direct air capture (DAC).Specific Goals/Accomplishments:• Prepared novel adsorbents through polymerization of aziridine from ordered mesoporous silica to form hyperbranched aminosilica (HAS)• Characterized composition and structure of HAS as amine loading changed• Developed new technique to cleave aminopolymer from silica support• Designed and fabricated new adsorption measurement systems• Measured humid adsorption capacities in packed-bed with mass spectrometry• Measured dry adsorption capacities by thermogravimetric analysis• Measured adsorption kinetics and related to HAS structure• Measured adsorption capacity of aminosilicas from ambient air• Designed a pilot scale adsorption system with steam desorption • Designed multi-component adsorption system to quantify the role of water during captureSpecialties: • Proficient in equipment/reactor/process design, construction, and troubleshooting • Proficient in organic and inorganic chemistry techniques: synthesis, separation, purification, and inert atmosphere techniques• Proficient in several analytical/physical chemistry techniques: N2 physisorption, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), size exclusion chromatography (SEC), gas chromatography (GC), and mass spectroscopy (MS)
