ABOUT JEFF KELLY

I am a pragmatic attorney with a decade of experience advising businesses on emerging technology issues and disputes, particularly involving data analytics, artificial intelligence, digital assets, and FinTech. I help entrepreneurs and companies effectively navigate changing regulations, government investigations, and complex corporate and securities law challenges. Data, Artificial Intelligence, and Cybersecurity: Working with data is an essential pillar of modern business, and I have assisted with many challenges related to data analytics, artificial intelligence, privacy, and cybersecurity. I regularly participate in interdisciplinary projects and policy groups related to responsible data science, artificial intelligence, and algorithmic bias. Digital Assets and Securities: I work with clients to make risk-informed decisions about the current framework for digital assets issuance and governance under United States laws. This ranges from structuring DAOs; creating and issuing cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and other tokens; and providing guidance on developing decentralized business and gaming models. Regulation and Complex Litigation: The rules governing emerging tech are constantly changing. I work with tech companies to address potential conflicts proactively, but I regularly advocate for tech companies faced with demands and investigations. I have spent a large part of my legal career appearing before specialized tribunals and agencies that concentrate on areas of emerging technology, corporate governance, and protecting trade secrets - including the North Carolina Business Court, the SEC, and federal courts. I have successfully argued and defended claims on appeal. Since technology is central to so much of what we do, I care deeply about whether new technology benefits the public interest. I serve in multiple leadership and advisory roles for regulators and professional associations on issues related to law and technology. I also work closely with innovation and entrepreneurship programs at several law schools and regularly volunteer on access to justice initiatives, including supporting the launch of the first Legal Aid Innovation Lab in the country. I love connecting with new people; give me a shout at j••••••••@nelsonmullins.com or here on LinkedIn.
