About Jeanette Davis

Dr. Jeanette Davis, also known as Dr. Ocean, is a marine microbiologist, ocean policy professional and 2X bestselling children\'s science book author She has served for nearly a decade at NOAA using genetic tools to manage ocean resources and worked with members of Congress on ocean policy and legislation. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Marine Science Department at Hampton University (HU). Her notable accomplishments include helping to discover a marine bacterium that fights cancer, which has been published in the Journal of Science, authoring the White House Ocean Decadal Plan that highlights essential ocean research and technology topics for the next decade, being featured in “Women of Power Series” Climate Champions: 15 Women Fighting for Your Future, and serving as an ocean movie consultant for the Oscar award winning film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Dr. Davis earned her B.S. in Marine and Environmental Science from HU and a Ph.D. in Marine Microbiology from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science – Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology. She is most excited to return to her “Home by the Sea” in the Marine and Environmental Science Department at HU which was recently listed in Essence Magazine as one of the best marine science programs in the country. Dr. Davis serves as a PI/co-PI on several grants including NSF, NOAA and ED, and she is a founding member of HU’s new Interdisciplinary Climate Science Program. In addition, Dr. Davis current research uses eDNA and bioinformatics to assess bacterial communities associated with marine invertebrates in the local Hampton watershed to uncover potential symbiotic relationships.
