The Professional Patient Advocates in Life Sciences (PPALS), a non-profit organization to support the function of Patient Advocacy within the biotech and pharmaceutical industry, was the brainchild of several individuals who manage this function within their respective companies. It was formed to address challenges associated with the overall role and responsibilities. Professional patient advocates in life sciences acknowledge that while this position lacks uniformity across the sector at the end of the day, they shared the common purpose: to bring the face of the patient and profile of the patient advocacy organization to the company.The mission of the PPALS is to advance Patient Advocacy as a profession; provide greater visibility for individuals in the patient advocacy field; encourage drug development and related companies to establish this function where it does not yet exist, as appropriate; and serve as a catalyst for positive change. Ultimately, PPALS can serve as the mechanism by which a national certification program for patient advocates in industry is developed. Professional Patient Advocates in Life Sciences (PPALS) is incorporated in the State of Connecticut, as of December 2014. PPALS is a recognized 501 (c)3 non-profit organization, having received its IRS Letter of Determination in February 2015; EIN # US 47•••••79.
