Works under the general supervision of the Police Information Technology Manager and is responsible for coordinating technical functions and implementing projects or services involving Geographic Information System (GIS) systems and software dealing with mapping crime activity events. Maintains and develops the geospatial GIS components in a law enforcement environment. Produces, develops, and maintains high-quality maps within the GIS systems including charts, models, and reports for presentations and recording keeping. Analyzes, captures, edits, and converts mapping data into GIS format to ensure metadata is compliant with all government regulations and standards. Creates, maintains, and updates databases and spatial data using thematic mapping techniques, geography, graphics, aerial and satellite data to correspond with Records Management System (R.M.S.) and crime data. Maintains map collections using GIS digitization. Receives and responds to requests for GIS technical support as needed. Utilizes Global Positioning System (GPS) or wireless GIS system, as needed, to verify the accuracy of data information within mapping visualizations. Installs, reviews, and maintains desktop software and spatial database connections related to GIS in conjunction with the Information Systems (IS) division. Conducts mapping research to ensure accurate data is received and entered. Creates and prepares a variety of correspondence, proposals, memoranda, and other written documents by utilizing various computer applications. Interacts and communicates verbally and in writing with management and staff on a variety of issues and concerns dealing with GIS, mapping, and crime activities.
