About John Dozier Hartley

For the last 9 years, I have served as the Canvas/Catalog (LMS) Admin for Extension in Alabama and focused on Instructional Design and Technology for building online courses. This has allowed me to repurpose many of my previous skills and experience, such as design, coding, accessibility, UI & UX, as well as my graduate degrees and certificates. My background is in graphic and multimedia design and development. For over 25+ years, my primary employment was in web/mobile design, development, and web management. However, I also have experience in design for a diverse variety of print applications, including large format, high-resolution graphics for billboards and fleet graphics, newspaper and magazine ads, letterhead/business cards, and logo/identity design, as well as in digital video editing, and 3D modeling and animation. In addition to my graphic design skills, I have experience using PHP and MySQL for dynamic web application development. I also have experience with both using and supporting Windows, Mac OS, and Linux desktop machines, as well as Unix (Solaris) and Linux servers. I thoroughly understand the necessity to work as a team and I supervise and support other designers and developers with this attitude in mind. I pride myself on the ability to discuss even the most complex projects with non-technical content providers and clientele in a clear, concise manner without any obfuscating technobabble, as well as to translate between the IT and Creative teams in the workplace. In addition, I understand the necessity for leadership to actively foster collaboration and teamwork within any company or organization to maintain a cohesive work environment. In recent years, I have added instructional design to my repertoire, focusing on online course development and distance learning primarily for adult education, Extension, and University Outreach. This actually leverages all of my previous experience in online design and development as well as adding useful knowledge and experience regarding how people think and learn, which crosses over to marketing communications applications. It all boils down to communicating information clearly and concisely for maximum retention.
