Early in my career as a newly minted Chartered Accountant, I was asked to help a bookkeeping team during a break between audit engagements. One client—a classic‑car restoration business—changed the entire trajectory of how I approach financial leadership. He poured his heart into building immaculate vehicles, but his financials were an afterthought, if at all. When year‑end arrived, he was blindsided: lower‑than‑expected results and a tax bill big enough to erase his vacation, his plans, and his peace of mind. That moment made something clear to me: you can’t run a business on once‑a‑year financial hindsight—not when your world, your projects, and your risks change month by month.That experience sparked an obsession with what truly protects a business: governance, smart internal controls, budgeting, cash‑flow management, risk planning, and decision‑making grounded in facts—not feelings. Over the next 20 years, I saw the same pattern across countless small and mid‑sized businesses: great owners, great products, great teams… paired with financial blind spots that quietly drain profit and cash flow.
