View department →

San Diego, CA, US

As the Senior Officer—Climate Economics, I am responsible for identifying opportunities for sectoral and cross-sector innovation and improved economic, environmental and social impact, especially for vulnerable and underserved populations. My primary tasks include developing relationships with key research and data partners, e.g. Brooking Institute and SANDAG; framing and conducting cross-sector analyses on key challenges in the region; identifying data and analytical gaps impeding progress on regional priorities; and evaluating progress against program and project success metrics. In addition, I work closely with the Executive Director to create and contribute to public events, seminars, and forums and communicate the impact of the Center’s work in an annual report and other relevant media.

ABOUT JAMAL RUSSELL BLACK

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege to work on various topics that have made a positive impact on vulnerable populations. As a researcher and consultant, my focus has been on evaluating systemic inequities within our economic system and developing decarbonization roadmaps. I’ve relied on data-driven and geospatial research techniques to gain a more comprehensive understanding of key issues and to generate actionable insights.Currently, I serve as the Senior Officer of Climate Economics, where I’m responsible for identifying opportunities for sectoral and cross-sector innovation to improve economic, environmental, and social outcomes—especially for vulnerable and underserved populations in San Diego. Recently, I’ve also embarked on a PhD, with my research focusing on equity, energy, and economics. In the past, I’ve worked with Fortune 100 companies on their decarbonization efforts, particularly in Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG accounting and reduction strategies. This included work on Net-Zero Science Based Targets, mobility TCO and emission optimization, carbon capture, storage and utilization market analysis, and carbon offset strategies.Additionally, I’ve produced quantitative research and strategic briefings at Hanover Research, overseen research and policy recommendations for the San Diego Workforce Partnership, and led Veridian Analytics. I hold a Master’s degree in Econometrics and Quantitative Economics from the University of California, San Diego.I firmly believe that it’s the responsibility of all humanity to find viable solutions to the climate crisis. My enthusiasm for innovative, market-based approaches to combat climate change is only surpassed by my commitment to ensuring an equitable green transition.
