About Jonathan Cornwell

I\'ve had a life long passion for Software Development and began writing simple software applications before the age of 10, continuing on to complete a B.S. in Computer Science at the age of 18. In more recent years I completed an M.S. in Computer Science to stay current with new developments in computer science.Early in my career I worked in the defense industry, specializing in C++, 3D graphics, geospatial, and simulations. I then moved to the west coast to join an early stage internet start-up, where I played a key software engineering role in development of all user facing components for a successful video platform that was eventually acquired.After seeing that acquisition through, I left to join The Climate Corporation, where I was a key contributor on many of our user facing products, primarily in the front end space. We were acquired and I stayed on there for several years after.I accepted an offer at Lyft, and was excited to go through the IPO there! I focused primarily on building internal UIs that were used heavily by our support agents, hub staff, and other engineers. This included all phases of the development process, from requirements gathering, user interviews, architecture, design, and writing code.After Lyft, I helped out briefly at a small startup, Brightloom, with some former colleagues from The Climate Corporation, before accepting an offer to join Airbnb after their IPO.In my spare time I enjoy keeping up with the current state of computer science, artificial intelligence, frontend development, and some hobby game development here and there, most recently in Godot.

Experience

1. Sr Software Engineer

   Airbnb

   Jan 2021 — Present

   Frontend lead for internal tooling projects in the trust and safety space. This included working closely with design, product, engineering, and other teams to scope and plan projects, complete frontend engineering work and some full stack tasks, support the product rollout via feature flags, and iterate given feedback from internal agents- Extensive use of JavaScript, Typescript, React, NodeJS, GraphQL, and a bit of Java as needed- Heavy use of AI tooling including Claude Code, Git Copilot, and internal AI tooling. Built features leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) for internal tooling- Strong commitment to code quality and testing. This included leading code quality initiatives for our team for several years by creating dashboards to monitor test levels across projects and assigning tasks across the team to ensure our projects were reliable and well tested. Personally tested much of the frontend code in our team using storybook, Happo screenshot testing, jest unit tests, axe accessibility tests, and playwright e2e tests- Monitored AWS costs for multiple teams, tuned project configurations to make use of available resources efficiently and decrease costs, and assigned tasks across teams to achieve these goals- Acted as interim manager for a quarter in addition to my engineering tasks, this included 1 on 1 meetings, career discussions, road map planning, handling intake requests from operations teams, and accessing performance of team members- Mentor and onboarding buddy for multiple employees, and led training sessions and office hours for onboarding and apprenticeship programs.
