About Jaymes Kralicek
Statistics will tell you that construction productivity in the US peaked in 1964, and has been declining now for four decades. This should be alarming, and frankly embarrassing, to us managers in the industry. While virtually all other industries have seen productivity soar since the digital revolution and other technological advancements, the construction industry instead seems to be going backwards. I believe it’s time we learn from Einstein’s definition of insanity, and stop building the same way expecting different results. As a project manager I see this as an opportunity for huge improvements and competitive advantages. I enthusiastically accept the challenge to think differently, and drive innovation from pre-construction to project closeout. My improvement model starts with the workplace culture, which I believe needs to shift from a culture of mistrust and conflict, to one of participation, empowerment, fairness, and dignity at work. Next, we should be incentivizing innovation by choosing project team members based upon maximum value and not simply lowest cost. Under current models, contractors compete to win work, not to deliver projects. Also, because production and efficiency is so reliant upon good design, we need to commit to up-front project planning, early contractor involvement, and a well-managed design process. Finally, and probably most obvious, we as construction professionals need to harness technology and smarter building practices. In my humble opinion, electronic drawings and use of iPads should not be considered “cutting-edge”. Project leaders should be continuously pushing the envelope of innovation to reduce waste and make our jobs easier.
