About Jay-Len M.

Jay-Len McLean (he/him) is a committed higher education professional passionate about equity, student development, and community-building. He currently serves as a Residence Life Coordinator at Rutgers University, where he supervises graduate staff, supports residential engagement, and advances inclusive student leadership initiatives.A proud native of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NY, Jay-Len earned his B.A. in Africana Studies with a minor in International Relations from Stony Brook University. As an undergraduate, he served as President of the Black Student Union, Student Representative for the Black and Latino Alumni Network, and co-founded the Black and Latinx Initiatives for Student Success—programs designed to holistically support historically marginalized students. His honors include the Alexandra Korry and Richard B. Moore Scholarships, and his thesis explored the decolonization of higher education through Black student activism and affinity program development.Jay-Len’s professional background includes roles in residence life, student advocacy, and cultural programming at Seton Hall University and Stony Brook University. He has facilitated community-based initiatives such as the Black and Latino Male Initiatives Dinner and the Black and Latina Women Initiatives Dinner, and has experience teaching first-year seminar courses. His work is grounded in social justice, critical theory, and student-centered practice, with experience across academic affairs, student conduct, and civic engagement.He is an active member of NASPA, ACPA, and MACUHO, and plans to pursue graduate studies in higher education and law to further advance equity and justice in postsecondary institutions. When he’s not working or studying, Jay-Len is the Music Director at Abundant Life Christian Church, where he blends his passion for mentorship with creative expression.
