I manage a team of software engineers that work on backend web services and cloud infrastructure- Built cloud infrastructure on GCP and Kubernetes, owning uptime and cloud spend- Maintained zero significant customer-impacting incidents company-wide while leading cloud engineering- Ran dozens of product POCs across datastores, load balancers, and observability platforms, selectingtools for performance, scalability, and integration fit- Owned REST, GraphQL, and WebSocket APIs in server-side Swift, serving 10 internal teams withpeak daily traffic of more than requests- Built the company’s first release process with GitLab CI, Terraform, and Helm, enabling monthlymanual releases and automated test-environment deploys up to 12 times per day- Standardized infrastructure as code with Terraform and Helm to improve consistency and reliability- Programmed dynamic rate limiting in server-side Swift to protect service stability under variable load- Designed and deployed mTLS proxy infrastructure to secure device-to-cloud communication for allproduction devices- Designed and deployed reverse-tunneling infrastructure (FRP) for authorized cloud-to-device access, enabling customer remote access features- Implemented observability pipeline with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, and Grafana LGTM to accelerateincident detection and root-cause analysis- Built and operated in-house CI runners processing jobs per day and reducing CI costs by 50%- Established on-call operations using PagerDuty and Grafana alerts to improve incident response- Led performance initiatives spanning benchmarking, load testing, and rate limiting across cloud services- Defined cloud team roadmap and aligned priorities with business objectives- Drove code quality through GitLab reviews and open-source contributions- Managed 11 software engineers across planning, 1:1s, quarterly reviews, and mentorship- Evaluated hundreds of candidates, interviewed dozens, and hired 6 engineers

ABOUT JAY HERRON

I\'m a software engineer who loves to learn and build. Formally trained as a mathematician, I was drawn to programming because of its real-world impact. In my career, I\'ve seen firsthand how my work has cut building carbon emissions, improved reliability, and simplified facility maintenance. Mirroring that from a software perspective, I love improving code maintainability with testing, simplifying infrastructure maintenance with observability tools, and reducing complexity with well-formed abstractions. Along the way, I love learning new tech, exploring different approaches, and sharing what I’ve learned. Thanks for visiting my page!
