I am enormously grateful to the Overseas Press Club Foundation for the Richard Pyle Scholarship. This award will support my work in Africa in 2025, and its namesake is a hero of journalism. Richard Pyle’s 49-year career with the Associated Press took him to the front lines of history, from coverage of the Cuban Missile Crisis to 9/11. Mr. Pyle was present when Desert Storm forced Iraq’s retreat from Kuwait and when the last American prisoners left Hanoi’s war camps. His leadership of the AP\'s Pulitzer Prize-winning Saigon bureau during the final years of the Vietnam War is an important testament to the importance of on-the-scene journalism.
