ABOUT JAWNO OKHIULU
My work is rooted the question: what does it take to build communities where we are better toward each other and the planet we call home?I’m jawno, a Bay Area philathropist, artist, gardener, educator, and community builder devoted to weaving stronger community fabric. My work lives at the intersection of creativity, compassion, and collective practice.At Waverley Street Foundation, I help move resources and shape strategies that support community-led climate solutions, including land access, food systems, arts & culture, and youth leadership. I’ve supported the deployment of over $286M in grantmaking, stewarding partnerships with organizations building pathways toward climate justice, cultural resilience, and regenerative economies.In the Bay Area, I create spaces where artists, organizers, and everyday people can learn, dream, and act together — strengthening the human connections that make democracy more possible.My background spans education, the arts, and social impact — including previous work with Decolonizing Wealth Project and Black Earth Farmers, nurturing narratives of regeneration, Afro-Indigeneity, and self-determination. I hold degrees in Human Biology and African and African American Studies from Stanford University, where I focused on the intersections of community health and culture.When I’m not working, you can find me in a garden, at a kitchen table in conversation, singing, or lost in a good piece of speculative fiction, dreaming of the worlds we’re building together.
