Imaging will be transformative for oncology drug development in the coming years, with AI revolutions in radiological response criteria, more regulatory approvals of imaging software for the detection, segmentation and classification of cancer, and advancements in scanner equipment that allow more patients around the world to undergo imaging. In our team of talented scientists, to apply both well-validated imaging criteria, develop novel molecular imaging techniques to visualize the PK/PD effects of GSK’s medicines and use AI to predict treatment response, with the goal to make a positive impact on cancer survival rates.

ABOUT JASPER VAN DER AART
A drug developer with 18 years experience in pharmaceutical R&D as a clinical scientist and imaging specialist. I currently lead the Oncology Clinical Imaging group at GSK, where we develop novel imaging biomarkers and implement tumor response assessment criteria to deliver results that impact drug development decision making.The various roles in my career span translational and clinical development in various settings; mostly industry, but also through a Clin Ops focused role in a phase 1 CRO and analytics/PK modelling roles in academia (leading to a PhD in Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, MSc in Biomedical Sciences, BSc in Psychology). Ultimately this experience allows me to focus on Imaging that is operationally feasible and worth investing resources in to create maximum impact for the business and patient benefit.What I do day-to-day-Working alongside colleagues from a wide range of pharma departments (Clinical, Biomarkers, Stats, AI/ML, Med affairs), as well as academic collaborators and CROs to meet the varied imaging needs for phase 1 to 3 clinical trials in Oncology at GSK-Develop PET radiotracers for clinical applications, and evaluate novel deep learning-based imaging endpoints that have a direct impact on asset-level decision making by senior leadership-Managing my team to setup and deliver imaging endpoints across a large clinical trial portfolio.I have been fortunate to be part of projects in which the imaging strategy led to data used in regulatory submissions and drug approvals, as well as mechanism of action studies that ultimately led to label extensions. Some of these medicines are now benefitting many cancer patients around the world.
