ABOUT JASON BASERMAN

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated with medicine. This interest began with childhood hospital visits to manage my asthma and grew as I studied biology during my undergrad. Shortly after I graduated, I was faced with the losses of my grandmother, grandfather and friend, Lindsay Kimmett. This experience cemented my desire to focus on helping people when they are the most vulnerable. I decided I wanted to be a doctor. My pursuit of this goal took me from bustling offices in New York City to pond hockey tournaments in Cochrane and a remote rural hospital in Kenya. I\'ve been fortunate to work and learn in these places which helped shape the leadership, communication, management and collaboration skills that I now rely on as a medical student every day. Following Lindsay\'s death, I wanted to honour her life by sharing her love of athletics. Together, a group of friends and I created the Kimmett Cup, an annual charity pond hockey tournament [lindsaykimmett.org]. The tournament is now in its seventh year and has raised over with all proceeds going to fund healthcare, education and athletics programs in Canada and across the world. The Kimmett Cup helped a lot of people, which inspired me to do more. This led me to Kenya’s St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital. While there, I participated in 28 emergency and elective surgeries and began to truly understand the challenges and rewards that come with being a medical professional. As a medical student at the University of Calgary, I continue to learn and teach others about the medical sciences through research initiatives for the Mayo Clinic, Alberta Children\'s Hospital and Tom Baker Cancer Centre. Learning and collaboration have always been a huge part of my life, and I look forward to developing and utilizing these skills as a practicing physician.
