Leading the Database Operations team through massive change in workload and architecture. Rearchitected entire SQL Server environment to reduce license count from 496 to 90 in 18 months. Improved observability to reduce nuisance paging and identify issues accurately. Executed move from on-prem to Azure IaaS. Saved over $1.3 million in year one,$2.5 million in years two-three. SQL Server Consolidation: Lead team through consolidation of databases to reduced server footprint in Azure and reduce SQL Enterprise licensing. • Reduced core pack count from 496 to 318 core packs utilizing existing servers. SQL Instance Stacking: Migrated entire estate from SQL 2016 on-prem and Azure IaaS servers to Azure IaaS servers with stacked instances using SQL Server 2022.• Reduced core pack count from 318 to 90 core packs.• Automated deployment of all new servers using Terraform and Puppet.• Migrated databases in nine months.• Improved performance on IaaS servers using isolated V2 SSD disks. SQL Observability: Replaced ineffective monitoring tooling with Red Gate Monitor.• Reduced overall cost of monitoring tooling by taking advantage of stacked instances.• Moved from selected servers being monitored to the entire estate being monitored. SQL Performance Tuning: Used new observability to quantify pain points in tSQL code and provide targeted work on bad stored procedures.• Provided a path to greatly improve server performance by targeting worst performing scripts.• Mentoring DBA and Development teams on tSQL best practices and database indexing.• Created tools to capture performance metrics on bad scripts and index usage.
