I enjoy helping clients protect intellectual property and capture its value, as well as helping clients understand potential intellectual property risks associated with developing and releasing a new product.I’ve helped clients set up patenting processes and procedures customized to achieve specific objectives in view of the competitive landscape present in the particular industry. As one example, a client was considering entering a field in which a competitor already held numerous patents. I helped the client set up a strategic filing process to support getting patents as quickly as possible for leverage purposes, and I helped the client identify areas absent from the competitor’s patent portfolio that were ripe for innovation.I’ve presented on numerous patent law topics, including business considerations in an international patent strategy, using a global filing strategy to decrease the delay in obtaining patents, considerations in patenting software, and IP due diligence to support mergers and acquisitions.The technologies that I work with are intentionally varied as I enjoy working through IP issues in connection with different technologies, understanding where strategies for such overlap and where they differ given the nature of the particular technologies. I’m known to comment that there’s “something new everyday” in my day-to-day professional life.Examples of technologies that I’ve worked with lately include artificial intelligence, immersive theater experiences, oilfield services (including mechanical tools, communications, and leveraging software), wireless telecommunications, financial technology (often referred to as FinTech), medical technology and devices, electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, agricultural equipment, and open source software.Please feel free to reach out for discussion via my email at j•••••••@ktslaw.com
