ABOUT JASON BARNES
Jason is an experienced social worker, mentor and non-profit founder. Recent roles he’s undertaken include practice manager, child protection conference chair, IRO and professional practice lead — overseeing the development of staff cohorts within a local authority including “step up to social work”, the apprenticeship programme, practice educators-in-training and BA/MA student placements. Jason has extensive experience as a practice educator, mentor, trainer and assessor of social work practice. He is skilled at supporting and training team managers to get the best from their practitioners.Jason is the proud founder and director of a non-profit called the social work action group (est. 2016) which exists to support social workers and champion relationship-based, person centred approaches in child safeguarding. A central ethos of the SWAG is collaboration between parents and practitioners and has culminated in campaigns and online content which is used in local authority training across the UK.Jason’s skills and innovation in social work have been awarded by his employer and in 2016 he was a national finalist for children’s social worker of the year in England and Wales. With two social work MA degrees, Jason is committed to professional development and has conducted research on supervision; appreciative inquiry and the support of ASYEs which contributed to learning and development within the local authority. Jason studied international ethics and global justice at the University of Oxford and is a passionate advocate for the rights of children and families who interact with social work.
