About Jasmine Edwards

Hi! I’m a screenwriter and filmmaker from Houston, TX—shaped by community resilience and a belief in storytelling as both art and advocacy. I hold a BFA in Film/Television Production from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, where I cultivated a creative voice grounded in empathy, precision, and purpose, with a focus on amplifying the lived experiences of communities too often overlooked. My filmmaking journey began at 17, when my short documentary Stop the Violence—a deeply personal exploration of the emotional aftermath of school shootings—was selected for the 2018 All American High School Film Festival and screened at AMC Empire Theaters in Times Square. The film was later recognized by the Anti-Defamation League for its emotional impact and youth-led advocacy, affirming my belief that storytelling can be a powerful catalyst for dialogue and change. At NYU, I explored themes like racial injustice, mental health, and generational trauma. My short film \"Confined\" used silence and minimalism to comment on police brutality and was nominated for the Tisch Winter Showcase. In \"Stay\", I turned the camera toward my own family, crafting a cinematic love letter to my cousin and others quietly enduring emotional depression. My pilot script \"Strings\", which delves into the emotional weight of ambition and familial pressure, was selected as one of NYU’s Top 10 projects for Pitch Night. Beyond the classroom, I interned at RadicalMedia and Untitled Entertainment, gaining invaluable insight into scripted development and industry workflows. After graduating into the 2023 Writers Strike and facing an unemployment standstill, I returned home to Houston before joining E! News in Los Angeles about 14 months later. There, I advanced into associate producing, until the show’s cancellation in September 2025. That moment inspired \"The Hollywood Desk\", my one-hour drama pilot exploring power, identity, and survival behind the scenes of a collapsing cable news show. Alongside this script, I’m currently developing a slate of work for submission to labs, fellowships, and residencies, with plans to seek representation from literary management companies like ColorCreative, Redefine Entertainment, and 3 Arts Entertainment—firms known for uplifting emerging, diverse voices. I\'m also preparing to apply for fully-funded MFA programs in Screenwriting, including Northwestern University and the Michener Center for Writers, with the long-term goal of mentoring the next generation of underrepresented storytellers. My work is driven by a desire to create space, visibility, and opportunity!
