ABOUT JARED HOYER

After graduating from the Wisconsin School of Business with a degree in actuarial science and risk management, I was fortunate enough to be offered a role as an Associate Actuarial Analyst at Optum. I first trained primarily to price Medicare Advantage bids. I obtained a wealth of knowledge along this journey. I learned how to effectively manage my time. I learned how to delegate. I learned how to ask questions. Some days I was a mentee, other days I was a mentor. Each and every day, I was a friend to those around me. I laughed, I cried, I helped produce quality products, and most importantly I failed numerous times. All of these experiences helped me grow both as a professional and a human. While temporarily lending aid to another team at Optum, I made a connection which led to an exciting new opportunity. I moved to the corporate sector of UnitedHealth Group as a Data Analyst for their Research and Development department. This role introduced me to a lot of innovative projects targeting all manner of populations. I was involved with pulling and analyzing all data necessary for research initiatives. Most notably, I worked on a study which looked at the rates of breakthrough COVID-19 among members who were fully vaccinated (particularly immunocompromised members). Conducting this study in the middle of a global pandemic was extremely rewarding. I gained new skills while learning how to handle such complex data. I became very knowledgeable in a subject which up until then had been shrouded in mystery. Most importantly, I was fueled by an incredible passion to find answers for our members.While I loved my work as a Data Analyst, that department took a very sudden and interesting turn. A lot of restructuring and reorganizing caused my initial attraction to the role to fade. I started to explore options that would allow me to continue my data analysis work, but in a more traditional actuarial role.That led me to my current role as an Actuarial Analyst for OptumHealth. I am part of the Critical Care Management team within Health Care Economics. My team specializes in Dual Special Needs Plans. I currently conduct data analyses for them, and help them examine trends in this space.Ultimately, I want to continue to prosper as a leader in all aspects of my life. Former UCLA men\'s basketball coach John Wooden once said:\"in order to be a great leader, you must be a great teacher, and in order to be a great teacher, you must always remain a student who keeps on learning.\" Wherever life takes me, I will always strive to learn more and more every single day.
