From this research, Jared and his colleagues develop decision aids, training systems, measures of performance and communications, and organizational designs that support mission leaders and their staffs. Jared is the author of more than 125 articles in journals, proceedings, and books concerning these and related topics.As Chief Scientist, Jared is responsible for aligning Aptima’s scientific and technical activities with the company’s strategic goals.Jared holds a Ph.D. in Human Learning and Cognition from Columbia University and a M.A. in Educational Technology from Teachers College, Columbia University. He served as the Industry Chair of the National Defense Industry Association’s Human Systems Division 20••••19. He is a Contributing Editor to the journal Human Factors and an occasional editor for other journals.

    Dr. Jared Freeman is Chief Scientist at Aptima, Inc. Dr. Freeman investigates human problem solving and decision making in real-world settings; develops methods of modeling, monitoring, and managing these processes; and designs analysis, training, and aiding applications to improve operations. Within the past several years, Dr. Freeman has served as Principal Investigator (P.I.) for projects analyze and develop systems to train and assess imagery analysts, information operations specialists, technicians for intelligence equipment, Air Force and Navy air crew, Marines and Soldiers in operations in the Global War on Terror, and interagency personnel engaged in Maritime Domain Awareness missions. He also has served as P.I. on projects to measure, monitor and manage team knowledge and collaboration; automate the analysis of voice communications; automate the analysis of written usability documents; and model the fit between warfighter capabilities, organizational structure, technologies, and mission processes. Prior to joining Aptima, Dr. Freeman was a scientist at Cognitive Technologies, where he developed a highly automated approach to assessing student knowledge of tactical situations, as well as instructional technology that improved situation assessment and planning by Army officers. Dr. Freeman consulted to Bell Labs, where he conducted research concerning how experts diagnose failures in complex software systems, co-developed a course based on that research, and taught it nationally. Dr. Freeman has published more than 120 chapters, articles, proceedings papers, and public presentations on the topics of critical thinking, task analysis, computational modeling of teams, performance measurement, and training. Dr. Freeman received a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from Columbia University and a M.A. in Educational Technology from Teachers College, Columbia University. He is a member of the Cognitive Science Society and a contributing editor to Human Factors.
