About Jan Solum

Jan Solum brings deep and wide management and operational experience from more than 30 years in the maritime industries in Europe and Americas to his role at Royal Caribbean Group.He has strong management skills in leading leaders and diverse teams in a complex global, multi-cultural business environment to gain foresight, create and capture growth opportunities and support business, operational & employee needs. Jan has had success with innovate solutions and developed new services supported by the right competence and teams, while at the same time ensuring required compliance and safety levels are met. His insight comes from a varied background of working onboard many different types of ships in global trade, through running the shore based operations of ships from both small vessel operators and large cruise lines, and by working for the largest Classification Society in the world supporting more than ships trading globally. Jan was part of bringing Carnival through its growth to it’s heights as the largest cruise line in the world, with the most ships and with 8 brands. Then he took part of bringing DNV to the lead as the largest classification society globally, through the merger with GL, and now he is part of the leadership team bringing Royal Caribbean Group to the front, leading and pole position of all cruise lines, turning the vacation of a lifetime into a lifetime of vacations.Jan holds a bachelor degree in Maritime Engineering from University of South Eastern Norway and has completed a comprehensive range of continuous education programs. In 2015 was invited to the DNV\'s Global Leadership Program over 9 months through cooperation with INSEAD Business college in Singapore & Paris and with Berkley in California. In the course of his career he has also published and contributed to several articles, books and technical maritime publications, and been the editor of the DNV newsletters for Port State Control and editor of their Maritime Insight Magazine for Cruise.

   Royal Caribbean Group

   Oversee safety and marine standards across the 5 brands in Royal Caribbean Group (RCG) with around 70 cruise ships in international trade. RCG ships consist of Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Silversea Cruises, and a joint venture with Tui Cruises (for the Mein Shiff and Hapag-Lloyd fleet), and operates across all segments in the ocean going cruise industry, soon also river cruises. Head of department that oversees operational and marine safety matters, innovation in safety, statutory and classification certification, the RCG meteorological team, all marine operations policies and procedures, safety investigations and special safety projects.The responsibilities include oversight of all the technical, safety and professional training programs for onboard deck and engine staff, as well as shoreside training for marine operations. RCG Cadet program is also managed by the department. Position reports directly to member of the executive committee, and is part of the senior leadership team in Global Marine Operations.
