The Canada Media Fund (CMF) fosters, develops, finances, and promotes the production of Canadian content and applications for all audiovisual media platforms. The CMF guides Canadian content towards a competitive global environment by fostering industry innovation, rewarding success, enabling a diversity of voices, and promoting access to content through public and private sector partnerships. The CMF receives financial contributions from the Government of Canada and Canada’s cable, satellite, and IPTV distributors.

ABOUT JANINE STEELE

Janine is an experienced media producer and arts administrator with a focus on digital strategy and immersive technologies. Currently, Janine is Director, Interactive Digital Media for the Canada Media Fund. In this role Janine plays a critical role in developing sector policy and financing programs to ensure the continued growth and resiliency of Canadian cultural IP in the digital space, including video games, XR and immersive works and software applications. Previously, she was a Programs Manager at Creative BC - the economic development granting agency for the province of BC - overseeing the design and execution of the Domestic Motion Picture Fund and Interactive Fund. In that role, she designed several industry-leading funding programs, including the first digital media funding available in BC, and the first targeted funding for equity deserving audio visual creators in BC. Thanks in part to her work in the space, in 2023 the government of BC announced an increase of $18 million over 3 years for funding across both sectors.While Operations Manager for the National Film Board of Canada\'s Vancouver based English Digital Studio, she produced or project managed pioneering interactive documentaries like Far Away From Far Away, Yesterday Today Tomorrow, Welcome to Pine Point, Circa 1948, Seven Digital Deadly Sins and Bear 71. Janine’s work has received dozens of awards including a Cannes Cyber Lion, FWA Site of the Year and multiple Webby Awards. In that time she managed collaborations with key partners, such as Google, the Guardian, imagineNATIVE, and VICE Media. During her time as Director for Digital at the NFB, she managed strategic planning and overall operations of the institution\'s digital platforms, especially its primary website, NFB.CA, the NFB Films app and all their educational products. She has been asked to speak at conferences and events around the world, including Vancouver, Montreal, New York, Tokyo and Amsterdam. She also routinely participates in funding juries, invited expert panels, pitch events and mentorship programs for emerging artists. In September 2022, Janine acted as Executive Producer for the inaugural SIGNALS exhibition at the Vancouver International Film Festival, a showcase that celebrated the power and potential of creative technology in storytelling.Janine lives and works on the traditional and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples–Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō, Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.
