Escalera an educational non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, founded by Jan and Bryson Garbett, is fighting the long-term effects of illiteracy in Mexico\'s poorest state: Chiapas. Since 1998 they have been working towards structural change for indigenous youth. The English translation of \"escalera\" is ladder. This name symbolizes the organization’s belief that education brings opportunities that lift children from poverty. Today Escalera runs three programs focusing on the various steps in high school. The REACH program motivates students to enroll, the COBACH Emprende gives high school students the tools they need to create a business and the school building program provides students with the clean and safe spaces they need to thrive.Some key acheivements include- An innovative program that increases high school enrollment in rural, indigenous middle schools in Chiapas. The program has served 21,945 students and is co-funded by USAID Development Innovation Ventures as well as the Chiapas government in the first Payment by Results contract for education in Latin America- Developed and ran the first randomized control trial of its kind to improve education quality in Mexico. The program reached 24,476 students and increased learning levels by an entire grade level for a cost of only $27 per student- In 2019, Celebrated 20 years of 180 schools and scholarships to students in Chiapas, Mexico-Introduced a pre-fabricated building model that cut school construction costs by 50%. According to former governor of Chiapas, Juan Sabinas, these prefabricated schools have provided a model that they used to build schools under the \"Una Aula Cada Tres Horas\" campaign
