ABOUT JANET MARION PURDY
An art historian specializing in historical Africa, Southwest Asia, and the western Indian Ocean world, my research interests include inscriptions and symbolic imagery on ornamentally carved doorways and thresholds in the Indian Ocean world-with special expertise in Zanzibar door carvings-and related visual affinities in Afro-Arab-Asian artistic production and exchange. I am particularly interested in the transmission of talismanic patterns and designs in their diverse protective functions across different mediums, especially textiles but also metalwork, jewelry, and architectural adornment. In curatorial practice and education, I aim to expand understanding of the arts of Africa and SW Asia through collaborations with global colleagues that emphasize their broader histories as integrated into global networks and prioritize traditional, local, and intangible knowledges and belief systems.#zanzibardoorshttps://artic.academia.edu/JanetPurdy
