About Janet Lowder

Janet L. Lowder, a shareholder in the firm of Hickman & Lowder Co, L.P.A, has devoted her career to promoting and protecting the legal rights of the elderly and of persons with mental and physical disabilities. She received her law degree, summa cum laude, from Cleveland Marshall College of Law as a single mother with three children and while working full time. She is a recognized authority on elder law and Medicaid issues and estate planning for families with special needs. Janet is Certified in Elder Law (CELA) by the National Elder Law Foundation and is certified as an Elder Law Specialist by the Ohio State Bar Association. Janet received the 2012 NAELA Powley Award for leadership in promoting a greater understanding of the rights and needs of elders and persons with special needs. She was chosen as Lawyer of the Year – Cleveland in Trusts and Estates (2013) and in Elder Law (2016 and 2018) by Best Lawyers in America. She was named by Superlawyers to the top 25 female lawyers in Cleveland in 2015 and 2016 and to the top 50 female lawyers in Ohio for 2015. Janet is the former president of the Special Needs Alliance, and was Co-Chair of the Long Term Care, Medicaid and Special Needs Trust Committee of the American Bar Association for two terms. She is a ruling Elder and co-chair of the Mission and Urban Wellness committee at Old Stone Church. She serves a trustee for the Woodruff Foundation. Janet is married to David Kinkaid and has three adult children and one granddaughter. In her spare time, Janet enjoys family, gardening, boating and restoring her carriage house in Bratenahl. Janet’s parents live in a separate apartment at her home in the horse barn (where, as her father likes to tell people, they each have a stall and get a daily bale of hay.)
