About Janelle Lawrence

I remember being told once by my sixth grade teacher that black people are the cursed descendant of Ham, the cursed son of Noah. At that moment, I realized that my private school education did not protect me from racist biases and the narrative that people of color are simply anomalies the world cannot seem to eradicate. To add insult to injury, I was also told that I am forbidden to hold positions of power because women should not have any authority over men. Those moments defined me and gave me the motivation to excel academically so that I would be ready to excel professionally. Those sentiments make me realize that our children deserve educators who recognize their potential to be successful academically as well as professionally. Our students, our marginalized and under-resourced students deserve educators and institutions fighting for them and encouraging them to move beyond their dismal circumstances.
