ABOUT JANELLE GONZAGA
Fun fact: I have been playing classical guitar for more than eight years now. Without guitar, I would not be in the mental health field to begin with. Playing classical guitar helped create a space to maintain my mental health, but I didn’t know how much it would later impact me at the time. While discovering what mental health means to me, I came to George Mason University thinking that I would be a chemist. After taking a research class as a freshman and writing about “How Mobile Phone Usage, Technological-Related Anxiety and Depression Affects College Students\", I realized I needed to switch my major from Chemistry to Psychology as soon as I could. I discovered that my passion was not working with chemicals, but rather wanting to teach others on how to improve their well-being and mental health. I switched my major to Psychology the next semester. Naturally, being a curious freshman hungry for opportunities at Mason, I discovered Mason Psychology Club. Shortly after, I was so invested in the club that I became the historian for them that same semester. Continuing on with my academic and professional journey, I was selected to be the Vice President (20••••20), President (20••••21), and Senior Student Advisor of Mason Psychology Club in 2021, where I continued to spread awareness of psychology-related and mental health topics to members. Also, I became one of the youngest members of the Honors Psychology Program, accepted as a sophomore. In this three semester thesis program, I completed and defended my thesis on May 2021 regarding classical guitar majors and non-music majors while assessing for absolute pitch (a trait in which one can identify a musical note without an external reference) and pitch discrimination (the ability to differentiate between two pitches from each other). Currently, I work as a substitute teacher at Loudoun County Public Schools, focusing on students\' mental wellbeing. Who knew that a hobby could change your whole life?
