ABOUT JANA SPALDING
Physician, Certified Peer Support Specialist, Recovery Administrator and Educator. 25 year career as an advocate for incorporating peer support at every level of health care delivery. I have participated in the dissemination of the philosophy of recovery from mental illness and the growth of peer support as a profession. It is encouraging to see systems transition to that approach, and yet we have a long way to go before every person facing a behavioral health can access the care they need throughout their lifespan. I would like to see the health care system as a whole, private, public, medical, behavioral, all the silos-pursuing and promoting culturally humble, holistic, evidence-based, kind and welcoming approaches to serve individuals in reaching their health and life goals. Daily I appreciate more and more the power of peer support as a service in health care. Professional, skilled support is transformative when combined with psychiatric care, counseling and rehabilitation. I am also gaining an understanding of the value and importance of family support. Families (for those fortunate enough to have them), are the first line of support for persons with behavioral health challenges. However, stigma, ignorance of behavioral health challenges, and a system with major gaps in providing behavioral health services, are barriers for the person in need of care and the families and communities that want to support them. As a native Spanish speaker, I advocate for culturally and linguistically humble support and treatment for the diverse Spanish speaking community in the US, and for all individuals whose primary language is not English.
