WORK HISTORY
Associate Faculty @Brap
GB
Since 2020 I have been part of the regular faculty with the Birmingham-based antiracist organisation brap - brap.org.uk. The approach to antiracism we use emphasises that race is \'an idea not a fact\' and explores the relationship between the systemic and the deeply individual. A typical programme focuses on the white leaders in large NHS trusts. We support and challenge them to be deeply changed at a personal level, to then become active disruptors of systemic racism. Recognising that \'racialised thinking leads to raciaslised outcomes\' we emphasise the need to understand the root causes of the systematic racial inequalities observed across society. The role involves presenting to large groups on highly emotive content. Recognising the role of feelings and embodied reactions, we often make space for action learning sets with smaller groups of participants to encourage them to process their learning in the fullest sense. The work is demanding on every level but has supported my development more than anything else I have experienced.
