ABOUT JAMIE FURNISS
I was born and raised in Canada’s Yukon Territory and my first career was in law before my interest in other cultures led me to study Arabic and international development in Oxford (PhD 2012), and conduct ethnographic fieldwork among Cairo’s waste collectors. I then worked for approx. 10 years as a university lecturer and researcher—primarily in Tunisia, France, the UK, Germany and Egypt—specializing in environment, international development, and the societies and cultures of the Middle East and North Africa. Never an ‘ivory tower’ academic, I collaborated frequently during this time with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and numerous creative and cultural sector organizations, for example on museum and photo exhibitions, live artistic performances, and a documentary film. I also worked as a legal and academic translator between French and English.Since 2023 I have been pursuing my two great passions—Arabic and North African culture, on the one hand, and the protection of our planet, on the other—in new ways that, somehow, both centre on people’s culinary practices (I guess that is my third passion). The anthropologist in me organizes tours that explore Tunisia through its food (cooking classes, market tours, visits to farms and producers to taste and learn about typical products, etc) in collaboration with a Tunisian partner And after many years focusing largely on waste & recycling, I have pivoted to focus on climate change, nested within the questions of international development that have also been compelling to me, by supporting the carbon market aspect of Biolite Energy’s “improved cooking” programmes. Circling back on my first career, my work in this field is largely regulatory, government relations and legal (including on financing), but has also involved some efforts to convince buyers of the value of supporting projects through the purchase of carbon credits.
