About James Shambaugh
More than 30 years experience in the US and in developing countries promoting innovative approaches to complex conservation and development challenges. Strong interdisciplinary background in strategic planning, science management, monitoring and evaluation, training and facilitation, capacity building, writing and editing, communications and outreach, and translating scientific research to decision-makers, policy-makers, and other users. In current role with NOAA\'s Pacific Marine Environmental Lab (PMEL), oversees 6 research groups with a combined annual budget of $12-13M (approximately $6M in NOAA funding and $6-7M in external funds). Supervises 17 Federal research and technical employees and supports an additional 35-40 Cooperative Institute and contractor staff in Seattle, Washington and Newport, Oregon. The 6 research groups include Arctic Climate, Ecosystems Fisheries-Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (Eco-FOCI), NOAA Center for Tsunami Research (NCTR), Earth-Ocean Interactions (EOI), Ocean Acoustics, and Genomics/Genetics. Has worked with a range of government and non-government organizations, including the US State Department, the Peace Corps, World Wildlife Fund, US Agency for International Development (USAID), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and USDA Soil Conservation Service. Before this spent three years as a forestry volunteer with the Peace Corps in Mali, West Africa. Holds a master’s degree in environmental studies from Yale University.
