ABOUT JAMES OFTELIE
An experienced mobile hydraulics engineer on a continuing quest to produce the \"bulletproof\" hydraulic system. Yes such a thing is possible. A capable, dependable and long-life hydraulic system in mobile off-road equipment doesn\'t need to cost any more than a system designed to fail. The difference could be a simple reservoir design feature or layout decision that can result in truly baffling problems. For example, a common pressure-balanced gear pump failure mode is too often diagnosed as \"fluid contamination\" related, when in fact it is caused by ingested air. We all understand what particulate and water contamination is; air is also a form of contamination in our systems and must be treated as such. When I left nuclear power behind and entered the hydraulics business 26 years ago, I was informed that the technology was \"mature\" and efforts were being made to replace it with electric. Since those days, I have found that hydraulics isn\'t going away and in fact today it is employing some very exciting technology innovations. Mobile equipment hydraulics is an excellent place for a problem-solver who enjoys a challenge and wants to do some amazing things. I am a Mechanical Engineer/MBA in the mobile hydraulics industry, demonstrating skills in the design, application, diagnosis, marketing, sales and management of open- and closed-circuit mobile hydraulic components and systems.
