ABOUT JAMES FOLENO
I am a rising sophomore at Bates College from Cambridge, MA, currently choosing a major in the social sciences. After half a decade working in non-profits for humanitarian causes and campaigning for local candidates, I am transitioning fully into political work. I am interested in a future career in local or state government, where I can bring about meaningful change—either by working under a candidate or running for office myself. This summer, I decided to take a trip to a different part of the country and surround myself with work in politics, sustainability, and community engagement. I am interning for Nashville Metropolitan Councilwoman Joy Styles, Climate Wiser, and Hands On Nashville (powered by the United Way of Greater Nashville). At Bates, I have spent over one hundred hours working with multilingual students at Lewiston High School (LHS) for my community placement as a Bonner Leader. I also had a successful first year on the Brooks Quimby Debate Council (BQDC), advancing to the novice quarterfinals in both an American Parliamentary debate tournament and a British Parliamentary debate tournament. In May, I was elected president of the BQDC. I am grateful for how debate has deepened my knowledge of geopolitical issues and strengthened my critical thinking skills. Finally, I am further integrated into the Bates community as a Junior Advisor (JA) and a Restorative Practices Advisor (RPA).
