ABOUT JAMES CHU

Growing up in three very different continents (Asia, Europe and North America) with diverse cultural backgrounds had profoundly enriched and influenced me as a multi-disciplinary designer, visionary thinker and citizen of the world. Before enrolling in the Industrial Design program at ArtCenter College of Design, I earned a B.S. degree from the world’s 10th ranked Computer Science program at University of Southern California. After working 3+ years at Burroughs, the 2nd largest mainframe computer manufacture in the world at that time, I decided to pursue my passion in design and got into ArtCenter’s top-ranked ID program. I have 25+ years of experience, expertise in brand strategy and user-centered multidisciplinary design for top-ranked global brands, Fortune 500 companies, municipality, non-profit institutions, mid-cap companies as well as small start-ups. I\'ve had the fortune to consult and be hired for leading projects and workshops and teaching research, brand strategy and multidisciplinary design for Nike, Nokia/Vertu, Motorola, Cisco/Linksys, Belkin, ArtCenter College of Design, Verizon, Uber, Microsoft, P&G, Nestle, USGS, Visa, ADP, Piaggio, BYD Auto, Vans, Avery, Disney, Quiksilver, City of Pasadena and many more. As an example, I led multidisciplinary teams, created global branding strategies and roadmaps for Belkin that contributed to a 200%+ growth in just 3+ years. I have mentored countless students who are now influencing businesses to create meaningful experiences for their customers.Specialties: User-centered multidisciplinary design (branding, product design, UX, IxD, retail experience, environment, system design, service design), holistic brand strategy (strategic foresight & planning, roadmap, brand experience, user insights, customer-centered value proposition, brand identity system), multidisciplinary team building & management, cross-functional collaborations, branding/design education, professional speaking and leading creative workshops.
