At Uber Freight, I help lead the charge to build out new platforms and initiatives, as well as provide guidance on architecture, SRE principles, observability and lessons learned from a decade in tech. A big focus of my work is using AI powered tools like Cursor, Gemini, Claude Code and others to greatly increase the productivity of our team. I also build AI-backed tools to solve critical business problems. For example, I developed Shakespeare.ai, a web application on GCP that uses Gemini to slash the time required to write technical documentation. ABOUT JAMES BERGER

Hi! I design and prototype cloud-based platforms, as well as designing and building automation that allows smaller and more nimble teams to handle larger tasks and environments than previously possible. Everything I work on supports two main ideals; one, freeing humans up to do what humans do best, to think and analyze by removing mind-numbing, repetitive task based work, and two, allowing companies to scale their infrastructure up more rapidly than ever before.Previously, I worked at Splunk for several years as one of the first SREs on the CloudWorks team, focused on building out their latest Splunk Cloud platform, using AWS, Puppet and Terraform.Prior to that, I worked at AWS for two and a half years as a Cloud engineer, focused on EC2 Linux, as well as services like Cloud Formation, Ops Works and Elastic Beanstalk. I also taught classes at AWS on the EC2 backend API, covering all the things that happen from clicking \'launch instance\' to when the instance is first available.While working at AWS, and later while working at Splunk, I taught part time as an adjunct professor of computer science at the University of Dallas, educating CS students on Linux and systems engineering.I\'m not a programmer or a DBA, but I play both on TV. Decent with Python, Bash, MySQL, MSSQL, and minor amounts of work with PostgreSQL and Oracle.
