About James Alterbaum
My mission as Of Counsel in a 110-year-old middle-market law firm is to assist aspiring entrepreneurs in growing their businesses by preparing them for “Prime Time, ” whether that means acquiring companies, growing organically, creating a liquidity event, raising capital, or what I refer to as “cradle-to-grave service.” I take pride in my ability to negotiate and close deals without ruffling feathers. My involvement in Columbia Business School’s Lang and Greenhouse Funds, where I counseled entrepreneurs is an example of my commitment, as is my relationship with a variety of business incubators, many of which are in the funding and the M&A area. I keep an active list of relationships in ancillary fields, including investment bankers, accountants, valuation experts, wealth managers and insurance experts whom I routinely work with and introduce to clients as the occasion arises. My background in Accounting and Finance from the Wharton School, a stint at the Parisian branch of Chase Manhattan Bank, several years of experience with an accounting firm, and then to Yale Law School has helped me attain my goals. My involvement with the accounting practice at Moses & Singer LLP, representing accountants in partnership agreements and acquisitions, as well as with regulatory compliance and independence investigations enables me to keep up with new developments in an adjunct field. I have represented numerous private and public companies in a broad array of industries - including food, manufacturing, health care and technology and am proud of my philanthropic activities, having been the honoree of a variety of charitable organizations involving drug outreach, epilepsy research, and religious organizations. Specialties: corporate law, family-owned businesses, middle market, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, equity and debt financing, labor and employment, securities and capital markets, accounting law.
