ABOUT JAMES VIIKINSALO
Presently I am responsible for real-time transient stability and voltage stability study processes in the Southern Company system control center. Primary duties in this role are the provision and coordination of 24x7x365 support to system operators for analysis and guidance in response to any stability program alarms generated; update dynamics and power flow models as necessary to maintain reliability; update stability analysis software as necessary; continuously work to enhance near real-time stability study processes and capabilities.I previously served as the Southern Company transmission liaison to all interconnected generator owners within the Southern Balancing Area; ensured any operating issues with existing plants were addressed and operating protocols were satisfied; guided new project developers through the initial synchronization process, and ensured all operational requirements were met before declaring them fit for commercial operation. Some of my other past experience includes OASIS operations administration, E-Tag and OASIS standards development, reliability standards compliance monitoring, transmission planning transient stability studies, and extensive participation in interregional power flow and dynamics model-building efforts and joint transfer capability studies.I am the co-author of an panel paper on the implementation of real-time stability analysis at the Southern Company system control center, and a contributing co-author to an textbook on real-time stability assessment in modern power system control centers.
