The Academy of Exercise Physiology and Sports Medicine magnet program (Get Fit) is designed for students and parents who recognize and appreciate the importance of establishing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The program also prepares those students who might choose to pursue a medical, health, or wellness related career. Students accepted into program benefit from a structured learning community of science, social studies, and specialized physical education classes each day, then join the larger school environment for their remaining three classes. Through course work, seminars, and field studies, students study advanced anatomy and physiology, the mechanics of movement, the physics of motion, and exploration of the historical implications of health and fitness. The emphasis on health and wellness extends to the core content areas of the magnet program. Monthly family seminars are the highlight of the program where parents and students come together to explore topics focusing on maintaining healthy lifestyles. The program is designed to provide a variety of activities that promote wellness, fitness, and motor development. Using state-of-the-art equipment and technology, students produce an individual health and fitness profile which is sent home monthly. These profiles are used to develop a personalized health and fitness portfolio and to create a customized exercise and nutrition program. All students participate in resistance training and cardiovascular training twice a week for the entire year. I teach the same students all year, for three years, due to their participation in the magnet program. Upon completion of the program, students will earn one high school credit before entering high school.
