ABOUT JAMES SCHWAB
I have 35 years of experience in the field of urban planning, with an academic background that includes a master\'s in journalism as well as urban and regional planning. That double professional identity has allowed me to produce numerous magazine articles and two books as well as editing, authoring, co-authoring, or managing numerous technical and professional reports on various aspects of planning, particularly in the areas of hazard mitigation, disaster recovery, environmental planning, and zoning. In May 2017, I retired from APA to undertake a series of independent activities including book writing, consulting, teaching, and public speaking. From 1990 to 2017, I served as co-editor of APA\'s monthly Zoning Practice. From 20••••17, I served as manager of APA\'s Hazards Planning Center. That put me at the epicenter of much of the new research and training in this area in the U.S. and abroad. Overseas experience has included participating in: 1) site planning training in the Dominican Republic; 2) an interdisciplinary mission on long-term reconstruction in Sri Lanka following the Indian Ocean tsunami; 3) speaking at an international disaster recovery conference in Taiwan; 4) a three-week visiting fellowship in the summer of 2008 in New Zealand with the Centre for Advanced Engineering in New Zealand; and 5) speaking at a conference on climate change and city planning in Venice, Italy, in May 2013.From 20••••09, I taught at the University of Illinois-Chicago on disaster planning, and since 2008, at the University of Iowa\'s School of Planning and Public Affairs.Specialties: Hazard mitigation planning, disaster recovery, environmental planning
