About James S. Pallikal
I am a pharmaceutical professional with broad R&D experience, currently serving as a search and evaluation Director within Biopharmaceutical R&D Business Development (BD) at AstraZeneca (AZ). My core responsibility is to lead search and evaluation activities from initial strategic screening through deal execution of external opportunities in preclinical and clinical stages of development as well as technologies.Previously, I built a technical foundation in chemistry, manufacturing, and controls (CMC) for biologics of varying complexity from traditional monoclonal antibodies to more novel molecular formats. I served as a purification process development scientist and grew into leader of the drug substance purification technology transfer (TT) team.As TT team lead at AZ, I oversaw a group of 14 engineers/scientists (direct and indirect reports) as well as matrix managed large project teams (20+ members) of internal/external subject matter experts (SMEs) from diverse functional areas (i.e. Development, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, etc.) The TT team defines and transfers clinical and commercial drug substance processes to internal, external, and global manufacturing facilities; this includes process validation campaigns, execution of small-scale validation studies, and regulatory submissions. Extensive stakeholder management and business process optimization were key attributes for success in the role, especially considering ever changing circumstances exacerbated during COVID-19.I have a passion for and have been recognized for critical and strategic thinking, staff career development, continuous improvement, and establishing high-functioning team structure, culture, and dynamics.Select commercial products which I have contributed to include Imfinzi™, Fasenra™, Lumoxiti™, Uplizna™, Adtralza™, Saphnelo™, Vaxzevria™, Evusheld™, Imjudo™, and Beyfortus™.Contributing to process development and establishing global manufacturing networks for Vaxzevria™ (COVID-19 viral vector vaccine) and Evusheld™ (COVID-19 long-acting antibody combination for immunocompromised) in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic are recent career highlights.With honors designations, I have completed both my BS/MS in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from The University of Maryland Baltimore County and my MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
