About James Phelps
James Phelps brings a wealth of research and development experience from the commercial, defense, and aerospace sectors. In the early 90’s, James invented an innovative planar RF filter design that was used extensively in missile destruct receivers. From the mid 1986 to 2002, James developed many RF and Microwave products for L-3 Communications, including an innovative quadricorrelating receiver for the STEX space experiment, a broadband jammer for the Army, and L-3’s first software-defined radio. James led the IBM Microelectronics RF systems design team located in Encinitas CA. He developed the specification for the F-35 Identify Friend or Foe (IFF) and created the general specification for F-22 at Northrop Grumman. In 2008, James conceived and built a prototype optical IMU system for hostage location and successfully led a reconfigurable microwave front end SBIR (Space Micro Inc). Between 20••••13, James was the Hardware Engineering manager at ArgonST/Boeing and in parallel, performed as the ORBCOMM 2 RF integrated product lead and lead hardware analyst (Software-defined Radio Front End, Transmitter Exciter and Power Amplifier, Parts Stress, reliability, radiation effect, Electromagnetic Interference and Compatibility, WCA, Multipaction, and Corona/Venting).
