I can look back on a fantastic career as an engineering consultant, spanning over forty years. Now semi-retired, I review work in the heritage sector at CTP, having joined at the beginning of 2016. The company is agile and the engineers practical and self-motivated. CTP looks after many historic estates, including churches, schools, university buildings, colleges and local authority portfolios, and also works for high-end residential clients and major London retailers, although I myself work exclusively on historic buildings and structures.My professional activities have included acting as series editor for a column in technical journal \'The Structural Engineer\', chairing the UK panel for Conservation Accreditation of Engineers (CARE) and membership of the Fabric Advisory Committee for Guildford Cathedral. Anxious to pass on skills, I have a particular interest in helping engineers write, and so communicate their own knowledge the better, something some do well and others do really quite badly!
